Between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca neighborhoods, right on the coast of Rio de Janeiro city, in the Tijuca Forest National Park, a legendary monolith with the face of an ancient giant rises 842 meters (aprox. 2762 feet) above the sea level. It is the world’s largest monolith on a coastline. Pedra da Gavea is an enormous rock surrounded by native, lush vegetation, in the Atlantic Rainforest. This massive rock is composed of gneiss and granite, and because of its location, it has been eroded by the elements. As time went by, the damage caused by nature gave the vertical face of the rock, the appearance of a human face. This natural incident led to a lot of speculations on whether it was all caused by nature or by some ancient civilization. Portuguese explorers gave the mountain, in 1502, the name of Gavea, due to its resemblance to a crow’s nest (a structure in the upper part of the main mast of a ship that is used as a lookout point). So the name Pedra da Gavea basically means Crow’s Nest Stone.
Pedra da Gavea Mountaineering Tour – Program
Our Pedra da Gavea Mountaineering Tour involves a 2 hours hike, with a short rock climbing part (15 meters/49 feet), and can be a bit challenging for travelers without experience, or for casual hikers . Once there at the summit, the most beautiful view of the city can be contemplated. This tour actually falls under the category of mountaineering and not hiking, because it involves a bit of rock climbing, so the use of climbing gear is necessary at some point. The climbing part is short and easy, and no previous experience is required. Due to its difficulty comparing to other hikes we provide, we strongly suggest travelers to be in good physical conditions, since most of this hike is done on a steep trail.
