The Petropolis City Tour is the perfect side trip for those who wish to know a bit more about brazilian history and the imperial times.Located between the forested hills of the Serra dos Órgãos, Petrópolis, the imperial city,  is a very well known winter holiday spot. Besides the appealing weather and esquisite landscape, the main attraction is the Summer Palace of the second Brazilian emperor, which is now the Imperial Museum, specializing in Imperial history and memorabilia.

The city’s name (Petropolis = city of Peter) honors Emperor Don Pedro II, the nation’s last king and son of Don Pedro I.The city was the summer residence of the brazilian emperor  in the 19th century, as well as thel capital of  Rio de Janeiro state between 1894 and 1902.

German farmers, encouraged by the emperor,  immigrated and  settled   there in 1843. Petropolis became a city in 1857. The road linking the city to Rio de Janeiro was inaugurated in 1910 and paved in 1928.

The urban designs were created  by Major-Engineer Julius Friedrich Koeler.
