Surfing is a water sport in which the wave rider rides on the forward face of a wave , carrying the surfer towards the shore. Surfing waves can be found in the ocean, as well as in lakes or rivers. For many centuries surfing was an important part of ancient Polynesian culture and was first observed by Europeans at Tahiti in 1767 . The natives surfed waves on alaia, paipo, and other water crafts, and did so on their bellies, knees, and feet. Nowadays, the definition of surfing usually refers to a surfer riding a wave standing up on a surfboard, but it also refers to surfers who surf without a board ( body surfers), the ones who use a windsurf board ( windsurfers), the ones who use a kite surfboard (kite surfers) or the ones who surf on a body board on a prone position ( body boarders).
