Tijuca Forest is Rio`s natural gem

Welcome to Tijuca Forest National Park, a verdant oasis nestled within the bustling city of Rio de Janeiro. This lush tropical paradise is not only a haven for biodiversity but also a playground for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. In this blog post, we'll delve into the wonders of Tijuca Forest National Park and provide you with valuable tips on what to bring and where to go for an unforgettable experience.

Discovering the Wonders of Tijuca Forest National Park

1. Breathtaking Waterfalls:

Start your journey with a visit to the mesmerizing waterfalls scattered throughout the park. Cascading down verdant cliffs, these natural wonders provide a refreshing retreat from the city heat. Don't miss the iconic Cascatinha Taunay and the majestic Cachoeira dos Primatas.

Taunay Falls is accessed by the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood, through the Sector A of the park, where the administration headquarters is located. You will need an Uber to go to this sector unless you are staying around Alto da Boa Vista. If you have a rental car, you can actually cross the whole of Sector A, and visit waterfalls, mountain summits, and even a circuit of caves.

The Primatas Falls is on the Sector B of the park, and can be accessed by Horto, which is a little neighborhood right behind the Botanic Garden. Due to its shorter distance from Ipanema and Copacabana, you can take an Uber to the Botanic Garden, visit it, then exit from behind and hike up to the falls, just 10 minutes away.

2. Hiking Trails for All Levels:

Put on your hiking boots and explore the park's trails. We have trails for all levels of hikers, including the ones that lead to the peaks of Pedra Bonita ( a 45-minute easy hike), Pedra da Gavea ( 2.5 hours difficult hike with steep terrain but great views), and Pico da Tijuca ( a 75-minute easy-moderate hike to the highest mountain in the park). From leisurely strolls to challenging trails, there's something for everyone. Be sure to hike to these 3 summits for panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro's skyline. In all 3 cases, it is advised to either hike with a buddy that knows the trails, or to hire an adventure tour operator.

3. Rich Biodiversity:

Tijuca Forest is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including rare orchids, colorful birds (toucans, parrots, Hawks, owls), sloaths, raccoons and playful monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander through the lush vegetation, and you may spot capuchin monkeys swinging from the trees or toucans perched on branches.

4. Historical Landmarks:

Immerse yourself in the park's history by exploring its fascinating landmarks. Visit the ruins of the Mayrink Chapel, a centuries-old church engulfed by nature, and marvel at the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer, which overlooks the city from Corcovado Mountain.
