Our Pedra da Gavea Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro involves a 2.5 hours hike, with a short rock climbing part
About Pedra da Gavea
Our Pedra da Gavea Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro happens between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca neighborhoods, right on the coast of Rio de Janeiro city, in the Tijuca Forest National Park, where a legendary monolith with the face of an ancient giant rises 842 meters (aprox. 2762 feet) above the sea level. It is one of the world’s largest monolith on a coastline. Pedra da Gavea is an enormous rock surrounded by native, lush vegetation, in the Atlantic Rainforest.
This massive rock is composed of gneiss and granite, and because of its location, it has been eroded by the elements. As time went by, the damage caused by nature gave the vertical face of the rock, the appearance of a human face. This natural incident led to a lot of speculations on whether it was all caused by nature or by some ancient civilization. Portuguese explorers gave the mountain, in 1502, the name of Gavea, due to its resemblance to a crow’s nest (a structure in the upper part of the main mast of a ship that is used as a lookout point). So the name Pedra da Gavea basically means Crow’s Nest Stone.
Our Pedra da Gavea Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro involves a 2.5 hours hike, with a short rock climbing part (15 meters/49 feet), and can be a bit challenging for travelers without experience, or for casual hikers . Once there at the summit, the most beautiful view of the city can be contemplated. Due to its difficulty comparing to other hikes we provide, we strongly suggest travelers to be in good physical conditions, since most of this hike is done on a steep trail.
We start with hotel pick up at 07:00. We reach the beginning of the trail within 30 to 45 minutes according to traffic.
We reach the summit after 2.5 hours of intense hiking, with some climbing parts, arriving there usually between 10:30 and 11:30am. We spend about 01 hour at the summit, contemplating the views and taking pictures.
After the visit we go down the mountain and are back in our vehicle around 01:00pm. Clients are back at their hotels around 02:00pm. End of our operations..

This hike was a perfect escape from the hustle of the crowded city. It’s probably about moderate intensity with some scrambling and only a small section of actual climbing. Our guide was professional, friendly and consistently checked to make sure everyone was managing alright. During the climb of Carrasqueira to get to the last stretch before the peak he put us in harnesses and showed us the correct technique and easiest pass to make it to the top, demonstrating patience and understanding even when one member of our group of 4 became hesitant about progressing further. The views at the top were spectacular and well worth the effort of hike. Communication with Rio Adventures was efficient and able to be done easily in English (something that’s not possible everywhere in Rio). I will definitely do another outdoor adventure with them when I return to Rio.
My boyfriend and I used this company for a private tour guide to hike Pedra da Gavea. I am an intermediate hiker and my boyfriend is an advanced hiker. We thought about not using a tour guide, but I'm so glad we did! Out guide was Hugo Sanchez, who was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the hikes Rio has to offer. He was also very personable and great to hang out with! For the rock climb part of the hike, he belayed us (optional) and i'm glad I had the extra security of being with someone who knows the trail and how to safely rock climb. If you plan to hike Pedra da Gavea (and you should!), definitely ask for Hugo. We will definitely be getting in touch with him the next time we're in Rio and want to explore more!
WOW, this was our favorite activity in Rio that we'll never forget! The tour to Pedra da Gavea was fantastic with our guide Carlos. He really helped us to get through some tricky parts of the Tijuca forest and was a pleasure to be with! It was one of the most difficult hikes I've ever done but the most rewarding. The view up top is the best! We highly recommend this tour if you're up for a challenge! It exceeded all of our expectations.
The tour guide (vinnie was so helpful and good) literally we would not be at the top without him, my. Girlfriend is scared of heights and vinnie helped her get to the top and back! The hike and view is awesome I Loved the rock climbing and my girlfriend with vinnie made it to the top, so glad as views are amazing! Top man would highly recommend, was professional and helpful!
Vinny collected us from the hotel and was very welcoming, he took us to the local supermarket to stock up with water and food for the hike. I was very nervous about the steeper parts of the hike, with Vinny’s amazing knowledge of the trail he was able to fully support me and was very kind and patience. Thank you so much Vinny I have made a great achievement with your help! We would highly recommend this tour! :)
By far the highlight of my trip to Brazil, and maybe even the highlight of my entire life! Warning, though, this hike is not for the unfit nor for those who have fear of heights: Pedra da Gavea sits close to 1 kilometer above sea level, and you’ll be hiking in what seems like a 45 degree angle for more than 2 hours, with a surprisingly scary 15 meter rock climbing part. However, it is one of the most rewarding hikes you’ll ever make: the view from the top is out of this world, and pictures you take there will definitely inundate your social media profiles with likes! Our guides on this particular tour were just perfect: Friendly, helpful, and unobtrusive... They even came to pick us up at our hotel by taxi! If you are in Rio, and are fit and adventurous, this should be #1 on your list.
I booked 4 trips over 3 days. I did Pedra da Gavea mountaineering with and amazing guide Igor. It gives you amazing views and I would highly recommend it as it was one of my favorites so far. Pico da Tijuca was a beautiful trip into the forest and a moderate hike. Pão de Açucar rock climbing was amazing and the guide Hugo was a great teacher and amazing climber. Lastly, I did the Scuba diving which was my first Scuba dive since my certification. The shop that was contracted to take us out was Mr. Diver. I brought my own equipment and I feel the dives were rushed, and some of my dive buddies equipment didn't work. My dive buddy was a complete idiot that used up here tank in 15 minutes, so the guide took me back out for another 30 minutes. I didn't get a discount for bringing all my own gear and if you are a certified diver I would look around for a different outfit as this was geared for mostly first timers. Overall, this is a very great company that will connect you with some great people to make your trip amazing.
Fernando was my guide for the Pedra Bonita hike and he was excellent. His very knowledgeable of the animals and flora and fauna of the forest and pointed out all sorts of things to me, even spotting a toucan which I was excited about. The hike was pretty easy and the view at the top was amazing. I had so much fun on this hike and highly recommend Fernando and Rio Adventures.
We decided to take a guide on Pedra de Gavea walk when we learnt about the climbing section and thought we would be more comfortable with expert support. Alex was a great guide who offered more than just a rope for the climb, very informative about Rio and brought us to the best place for açai! Definitely would recommend.
I did the Pedra Da Gavea tour. As it was off season in May it was only me, somebody else and the guide. It was the best adventure tour I have had in my life!!! Largely as the guide Rafael was sooo good. 5 star rating because (0) easy booking, contact and admin (1) off season, beautiful whether and not full of tourists (2) Rafael knew every stone, flower and insight (3) he guided us safely through the jungle up the mountain considering different skills (4) he knew where and how to make very good videos and pictures (5) pushed us also as we wanted a bit of challange. After all, excellet service from the beginning to the end. A MUST DO. But read the description, it is not a walk but an awesome climb and mountenaining tour.
We took 2 tours with rio adventures paragliding and a hiking tour up Pedra da Gavea. Both well organised with great communication before and during our tours! They informed us everyday before our paragliding tour what the wind was like and it got moved on a couple of days so if you are planning to do this make sure you book it within your first few days of being there in case it has to be changed due to the wind! They messaged me everyday on WhatsApp keeping well up to date! It was amazing once we got to do it the views are breathtaking and it's a must in Rio! Our second tour was a hiking one up Pedra Da Gavea we where lucky to get our tour guide to ourself just the 3 of us he was a great guy called Vinicius he picked us up from our apartment and we got to take a taxi bike up to the start of the hike. It's a great hike up and he said we did it in great time very lucky while at the top we had it to ourselves so got lots of great photos and it's another breathtaking view and a must in Rio! This is a great company to deal with and I would like to thank them for all there help in Rio !
I have been to Rio many times and always wanted to do the Pedra de Gavea tour. Finally, I arranged the trip -- it was about 2.5 hours to the top, and is probably one of the more advanced hikes I have done. The short rappeling section seems a bit scary but is fine, and our guide talked us through all of it. Vinicius was the best guide! He showed up on time to pick us up, speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and he had a lot of knowledge about all outdoor things to do in Rio. When we got to the top part, he was really good at explaining where to put right foot / left foot to make the climb easier and went at a slow pace when we were literally crawling up these huge boulders. The views at the top are worth the work!!
We had an amazing time on the hike to the top of Pedra da Gavea. The best view in all of Rio! Our guide was Rafael Cajá. He was the PERFECT guide. He is very responsible, attentive and personable. We loved that he scheduled the hike earlier than other tour companies, which allowed us to be the only ones on the trail and enjoy privately the top of Pedra da Gavea. He was on time to pick us up at our hotel and even offered to stop for coffee on the way. On the trail he was very attentive and ensured we were comfortable the entire time, even carrying some of our water. He also stopped when appropriate to point out flora and fauna on the trail. As to the trail itself, although it is ranked in the beginner to moderate range for hikes, due to the technical challenges towards the end of the hike (rock climbing), I highly recommend having a guide. It was a worthwhile investment and highly recommend Rafael!
Morro Dois Imãos - Santa Teresa & Tijuca Forest - Buzios - Pedra do Telegrafo Rio Adventures Tour was Awesome !!! Incredibles guides (Alexandre, Thiago, Vinicius) both in terms of theirs personalities and knowledges of Rio and Brazil. They surpassed all our expectations. We would definitely recommend booking a tour with Rio Adventures, you will not regret it. 100 %. See you soon.
Recomendado
Took a quick and rainy Jeep tour of Floresta da Tijuca with Tiago, and then a FANTASTIC climb of Pedra da Gavea with Felipe!! Very flexible and accommodating. Great times had by all!
Really challenging and enjoyable mountaineering tour. Lots of variety in the terrain and great views all the way up. Our guide was helpful, encouraging and a lot of fun to be with. We had a great time.
