The Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf) mountain, stands 396 meters (1300 feet) tall, and is one of Rio`s most famous post cards. Most travelers access the summit through the cable car, in operation since 1912. In this tour, we give travelers the chance to visit the summit taking a much more alternative way.

Sugar Loaf Mountaineering Tour – Program

Sugar Loaf Mountaineering Tour, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Happy couple at the climbing part.

Our Sugar Loaf  Mountaineering Tour  mixes hiking and a bit of rock climbing as well. The main difference between a normal hiking trip and mountaineering, is the fact that the second one uses climbing techniques and gear, at some point during the hike. To reach the summit, travelers will have to go through a steep trail, for at least 90 minutes .The use of climbing gear is needed on a 10 meters (33 feet) wall. But no worries, it is not a difficult climb and beginners are welcome. And once we reach the summit, travelers will have a surprising view of the city. There are plenty of  places to eat  up there, as well as easy access to restrooms and a free ride in the cable car on the way down to Urca mountain. Unlike most of the trails in Rio, the Sugar Loaf Trail does not have as many trees and vegetation along the way, so a sun block and a cap or hat are very important in sunny days.

  1. Yesterday, my 3 kids and I met up with Denis, our RA guide, to climb the Sugar Loaf. Denis was amazing! He was very patient with us, even as we were late to arrive at the merting spot, and then further delay, with my other kids. The climb took us 2.5 hours to get to the top, and at each point, Denis was kind enough to allow us….errr me….to rest and for water break. Denis was very knowledgeable about the terrain, and shared many stories of previous climbs along the way. During the 30 meter vertical rock climb, my palms began to perspire and I was unable to secure a ledge. I started to panic. Ever the calm climbing professional, Denis tossed me another line which allowed my legs to get firmer footing, and I was able to complete that segment of the climb. When we arrived at the top of Sugar Loaf, we grabbed the cable car down to the Morro do Urca for a well deserved Acai. Many thanks to our wonderful guide Denis, and to RA, for providing such a memorable experience.
